Board of Directors


The Right Way Academy's board of directors is composed of dedicated, local community members that meet on a regular basis to discuss strategy, oversight & accountability of our organization. 


Current board members are listed below:

Derek L. Smith - President

Derek is a retired Institutional Officer/Counselor for the Alameda County Juvenile Probation Department with 25+ years experience.  Born in Berkeley CA, Derek grew up in the Oakland Unified School District and graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1977.

For 35+ years, Derek has coached at the AAU and high school level.  He was the President/Coach of the Oakland Rebels Youth Basketball Program AAU for 19 years, and for 11 years was the assistant coach at Fremont High School. Through this time he mentored & helped many youths in his community excel to the next level and reach their personal goals of going to college and becoming productive citizens.

He is a strong Christian and lives a very spiritual life. He attends New Destiny Church of Oakland.

Jim Griffith - Vice President

Jim is a retired business professional that worked in both technology and consumer package goods industries across the United States.  Growing up in southern California, he attended UC Berkeley and played basketball for 4 years at Cal.  He graduated in 1978 with a degree in physical education. 

He is fully committed to building & growing young people through positive experiences that involve an individual's self-reliance, dedication, hard work, and commitment to goals and to team. 

Delvin Curry - Treasurer

Delvin “Del” Curry has spent over 25 years a a management consultant developing and implementing solutions for Fortune 100 organizations. Mr. Curry is also a high school boy’s basketball head coach. In addition, Mr. Curry, has spent several years in a variety of leadership roles for nonprofit organizations that focus on youth development and empowerment through athletics.

Rosalin Smith, RN - Secretary

Mother of 3 adult children, one of whom played AAU basketball.  I have been a nurse for 36 years, spending the majority of my career as a behavioral health nurse.  It is my life mission to be an advocate for those who have been stigmatized by being diagnosed with mental illness.

Frank A. Knight III - Board Member

Born in Oakland CA, Frank earned his bachelors degree at St. Mary's College of California, followed by a teaching credential from Holy Names University in Oakland.  He is currently the head men's basketball coach at Moreau Catholic High School in Hayward California where he led Moreau to 5 NCS (North Coast Section) championships and was selected CAA High School Coach of the Year in 2014 & 2016.

In addition to 23 years of coaching experience, Frank is also a motivational speaker and entrepreneur.  His style empowers others spiritually, academically, socially and financially.  Frank help send dozens of student-athletes to colleges across America.

Anthony "Tony" Jones - Board Member

Coach Tony Jones, an Oakland Native, Husband, Father and Believer.  Coach Jones has professionally served the citizens of Oakland for the last 25 years in the Department of Public Works and Transportation Services.  He’s been a JV and Assistant Varsity Coach over many years.  He serves as a Head Deacon for Glad Tidings International Church of God in Christ.

Anthony Eggelton - Performance

Anthony Eggleton is the Director of The Advanced Sports Training Institute in Oakland CA, one of the top training programs for athletes in Northern California. In Anthony's 40 years of experience, he has created strength & conditioning programs for female and male athletes at all levels:  amateur, high school, college, Olympic and professional both in the United States and Internationally.
